A Makeup Spring Clean

makeup spring clean

That minimalist lifestyle is so cool right now. Gone are the days of hoarding all the things, instead those surrounded by their consumerism lifestyle are frowned upon with the ‘ditch the stuff’ gals hailed as the new cool chicks on block. In a world where lifestyles around the world are accessible on social media, you suddenly know the ins & outs of someones wardrobe, even if that person lives on the other side of the world. Not only does this instantly connect strangers, it makes you very aware of how the other half live.

The rise of beauty blogging & vlogging initially created the infamous collection videos where one individual would parade their incomprehensibly large collection around to millions. Viewers would lust over the ability to own thousands of glosses knowing that in reality, each one would end up unused & going off. Now the tables have turned and instead we have a community of influencers sharing their beauty purges to rid themselves of all that stuff.

If you follow me over on my YouTube channel oh look here’s a link come join the party! I recently shared my Wear Your Makeup Challenge. Nope this wasn’t a weird ploy to get you to put loads of makeup on your face, instead it’s a challenge to myself and you to commit to wearing each item of makeup you own to really test whether you liked it and should keep it. Trust me it’s hard, hard to let go of the things and ignore that voice in your head screaming ‘oh but what if I decide to get back into teal eyeliner therefore need these 4 options just incase’. But trust me on this, once you start you can’t stop and afterwards, you feel so much better – bit like a big old bag of maltesers  ;)

This Easter weekend take out an hour, sit down with your collection (no matter how big or small) and challenge yourself to look at what you really like and more importantly, what you really wear. Anything unused, donate otherwise anything still within date & good condition, share with friends & family. Our tastes change, our makeup needs alter so take this time to break free from the overwhelming stash, embrace the one face you have and all that extra space you have. The picture above is my ‘bin’ pile after a Friday night Spring clean. No, I don’t hate all of these products but I haven’t reached for them in the past month therefore I know I won’t use them in the future. Come join in me in feeling cleansed of all your beauty stash!

  • I’m not at home, but now have such a strong urge to clean out my makeup stash x

  • Feel good right? Although I couldn’t part with very expensive stuff all that easily I think… I did have a major eyeshadow palette clear out recently!

    • Feels so good! And now I actually want to reach for the things I have and use them each day :) xx

  • Hi there, I did a makeup spring clean in January and I threw away a lot of rubbish products.
    Happy easter. Xxx

  • I did a massive cleanout over the last year. There’s still enough left :)

  • Yiotou_La

I always donate clothes that I don’t want/don’t wear/don’t like but I could never give away my shoes! I am such a hoarder! As for makeup, I throw out expired products and broken items. I haven’t done my spring clean yet, so there is so much stuff waiting for me!

    • It makes such a difference clearing through unwanted or unused things – also makes so much space as well! Just have to remember not to fill it all again ;) xx

  • I literally did this this morning! I love going through and rediscovering bits that I forgot I owned, and the thrill of finding out you still love it :)

  • I recently tossed out all my likely expired makeup. Such a sigh of relief!

  • I try to do this regularly, not just every season. Otherwise I just get overwhelmed. Cleaning out my stash gives me peace :-)

I am quite the minimalist person myself, I hate hoarding things but mainly due to being a student and having to move around so much! I have started to give my mum a few bits of my makeup that I no longer use anymore just because it seems like such a waste! xx

    • When I lived at Uni and in Bournemouth I had such a streamlined stash! Showed myself I really didnt need everything I thought I did xx

  • Great advice for sure! I do this far too often, I’d say once every 2-3 months I look through my makeup and beauty collection, purge what I don’t use and commit to using the things I want to keep! I am planning on doing the exact same thing with my wardrobe actually this afternoon too :) I tend to feel guilty over owning so much I don’t use or enjoy and so I feel so much better after a good clear out!

    • Me too – the guilt is so real! Need to keep everything down to a manageable size otherwise I just won’t use half the stuff I own!xx

  • I’m not a fan of the overly-minimalist attitude that’s suddenly come into fashion – I think little bits and bobs here and there make everything look homey and lived in, as opposed to a stark and bare showhome.

That said, I have always thought when seeing rather extensive ‘Makeup Collection’ videos on YouTube that it was all so unnecessary! As you said, most of it will be unused and go off. What’s the point in having it then?! I think it’s a great idea to declutter the makeup drawer and leave only the stuff you really love left behind.

    • There is no point spending the money and owning it if it never gets used and just ends up being binned. I think a streamlined stash is defo the way forward :) xx

  • This is so true, I will absolutely be doing this tonight and posting about it over the weekend !

  • This is such a well written post. I would join you but I think my collection is already rather ‘minimalist’. I love the look of all the makeup stashed away and having the choice of different products as they do different things. I will take from this post that I need to explore my collection and save for my holidays! xx

    • So glad you enjoyed the post :) Makeup stashed away does look pretty but it’s nice to know you’ll use everything you own as well!xx
