Essential Primers

essential primers

Primers – that ‘non essential’ stage in your makeup routine that I’ve vowed in the past to never need however find myself gravitating towards on a daily basis. You see, I get the premise, if you looks after your skin & have a stella routine in place you don’t need a primer as your complexion won’t naturally eat away at your makeup throughout the day. I’m totally on board with that theory and get it, however I also love primers. I love that extra step to hydrate my skin and boost those radiance levels. When I go in with foundation it’s been a solid 10 minutes since my AM skincare routine took place so I find that reaching for said primer helps to keep my skin in check.

There are two types of primers that I typically reach for, hydrating & radiance. None of those silicon ‘filler’ types over here thank you very much! My most fave is hydrating. Those primers that feel like a moisturiser, are light on your skin and glide over any dry patches to keep them at bay. The Too Faced Hangover Replenishing Face Primer does just this alongside boosting sallow skin that may have overindulged in the bubbly the night before. Then we have my one true love, the Marc Jacobs Under(cover) Perfecting Coconut Face Primer. I’ve been through half a bottle, I adore it and so does my skin.

The second type of primer I dabble in are those that fall under the category of radiance. Typically these primers sit within the pearlescent side of the family lifting lacklustre skin whilst bringing back that glow. For a soft focused finish on top try the Laura Mercier Radiance Foundation Primer. It blurs out imperfections alongside being available in this super cute mini size, perfect for those on the go. Really want to boost that luminosity? Grab the Dior Glow Maximiser Primer* that works under foundation to hydrate whilst providing some serious glow. This is a summer essential!

What are your favourite primers to use? Which ones do you reach for on a daily basis?

  • I have this MJ primer and was actually quite disappointed, it just does nothing for me. I literally got Hangover X yesterday for my birthday, can’t wait to try it out- love a good primer!

    • Oh no! I love the primer as I find it gives that final boost of hydrating I need before going in with my foundation. Hopefully you love the Too Faced primer!xx

  • I have heard so much about the Too Faced primer. I’m not someone who tends to reach for primers daily but it sounds so good, I may just have to give it a go. xx

  • I always hear good things about the hangover primer, I keep saying I need to test it out. I use Hourglass’s primer, and I promise by it. I’ve been using it 2+ years and still no complaints. I also hear great things about Becca’s radiance primer. Seeing as they are killing the highlighter game, I would definitely trust their primer! It’s on my list as well.

    • Hello, is that the hourglass veil mineral primer? I’ve got combination skin and I was recommended that but the price puts me off a little bit. Would you say it’s worth it? :)

      • Yes that’s the one! I would definitely recommend it. Before I purchased the $50 bottle, I used to buy the travel-size $22 bottle all the time as that price was a bit more reasonable. It’s small, but It lasted me around 2-3 months (doing my makeup 4-5x a week). Also, Sephora tends to offer that primer as one of their 100pt prizes quite often as well, so I would always grab those too when it was available!

    • I’ve heard great things about the Becca primer too – need to add it to the list!xx

  • Colleen Thomas

I tried grabbing the Too Faced primer but sadly my Sephora was out – I ended up grabbing the Becca Backlight Primer so let’s hope it’s a good one!

    • Let me know what you think of it – heard really good things and might have to pick it up myself!xx

  • I’m not a massive fan of silicone primers either. Hydrating all the way! I really need to pick up Hungover one, everyone seems to love it. My favourite is the Sleek bare kissed illuminator. Its great and so affordable :) xx

  • That Too Faced primer sounds sooo good!

  • I really want to try out the Too Faced primer as I’m obsessed with their products right now! My favourite primers of the moment are MAC Prep & Prime Skin Base and L’oreal Infallible Mattifying Base! xx

    • I used to be the same but since I’ve found how they can hydrate my skin and keep it looking & feeling happy – I’ve become hooked!xx

  • I want to try more of marc jacobs beauty but its so hard to get a hold of

  • I have the Laura Mercia one and I love that don’t get me wrong. I just got 2 samples of the Makeup Forever ones ( hydrating and redness correcting. ) They have changed my primer game, I think once I’m done my LM one I’ll be getting MU4E ones. LM radiant one is great under BB creams just gives you that little something/something !!! Great post
